We're Coming Home

Dear Friends,

Nearly two years after we left home in August 2005, we have decided it’s time to return to the US. We plan to fly back to the Washington, DC area the first week of June and will be searching for jobs that allow us to pursue our interest in international issues.

It is with sadness that we are leaving Pakistan. Though it was difficult in the beginning, we came to genuinely enjoy the beautiful mountains, interesting architecture, colorful trucks, great fresh fruits and vegetables, and terrific work opportunities. Most of all, we enjoyed the kind and hospitable interactions we had with Pakistani friends and colleagues. The photos in this update will show you a bit of our everyday lives in Islamabad, and what we're leaving behind.

Overall we found Pakistan to be a tremendously complex country, difficult to categorize or generalize. Living here has forced us to examine our assumptions about cultures and the way the world works. We have learned a lot and are grateful for the opportunity to live in a non-western context.

Thanks to each of you for supporting us while we were away—through emails, prayers, gifts of banana bread and interest in our experiences. We look forward to connecting with you in person in the coming months. We anticipate quite a transition back to U.S. culture, and may take things slowly at first.
